IT’S his hands, not those of Angus Young, on the cover of Let There Be Rock and yesterday would have been his 75th birthday.
Unfortunately, former Rose Tattoo and Buffalo guitarist Chris Turner didn’t quite make it, succumbing to multiple health issues surrounded by his family at his Sydney home last week.
Chris was born in London and emigrated in 1970 to Sydney after spending time honing his chops in New Zealand. After briefly being jailed on drugs charges in south-east Asia, he started a new life in the harbour city.
He joined Buffalo in 1975 and that’s how his digits ended up on the cover on the cover of Let There Be Rock. A former bandmate of Turner’s was charged with taking the sleeve photo and Angus was out of town on tour. Young reputedly thought Turner had “fat fingers” when he saw the finished article.
Turner’s solo band also include Pete Wells and Digger Royal so it made sense that whenever the Tatts needed an axeman between 1977 and 1981, they’d call up Turner. He also gigged with Billy Thorpe, Frankie J Holden and Stevie Wright.
Another rock soldier down. He is survived by his three children, Jesse, Billy and Tilly.
