TOM Morello has lifted the lid on Bruce Springsteen’s memorable performance of “Highway to Hell” with Eddie Vedder in Australia 11 years ago. Morello, then a member of Springsteen’s touring band, told Sirius XM the idea was inspired by a visit to Bon Scott’s grave in Fremantle.

According to Morello – then a member of Springsteen’s touring band – on the Trunk Nation program: “And I came into the hotel bar and Bruce was there and I said, ‘Do you think that there’s any possibility that the E Street band and AC/DC might overlap and we do a cover?’

“And he said ‘I’m going to give that some thought’. He went up to his hotel room and the next day at soundcheck said ‘we started working on “Highway to Hell”

“It took a while to get it together. Like, the E Street Band is a tremendous band, can play just about anything, but they don’t have a lot of – like – heavy metal miles under their boots, right?”

Springsteen opened his February 8 show at Perth Arena with the Ackadacka staple. Speaking on the Faction Talk station, Rage Against The Machine’s Morello continued that when the tour went to Melbourne’s AAMI Park, “Eddie Vedder happened to be in town was in the audience and happened to be doing a solo show nearby.

“So he was at the show and I was sitting in the dressing room beforehand and like the light bulb went off. I ran down to Bruce Springsteen’s dressing room. I said ‘we are in Australia where AC/DC is king. “Highway To Hell’ is like the unofficial national anthem of this country’.

“‘What if in this full soccer stadium we open the show with ‘Highway to Hell’ with Eddie Vedder and he was like ‘that’s a pretty good idea’ and we did.”

Morello told host Eddie Trunk: “And if you’ve think you’ve seen people go bananas at a show you haven’t unless you were there on that particular night it was pretty huge. We later recorded that song, the three of us together on one of my records. So check that out.”
