FOLLOWING the cancelation of a show due to “insurmountable obstacles”, ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard has died. He was 77.
The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner tells TMZ Beard died at home surrounded by family after a stay in a hospice.
Band leader – and the last surviving classic member – Billy Gibbons issued a statement that read: “Today, Elwood (Francis, bassist) and I lost a great friend and collaborator.
“And the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top. The band of which he was part for six decades is going to keep on keeping on as he had wished.”
No cause of death has been revealed.
The other classice member of the Texan boogie merchants, bassist Dusty Hill, died in 2021.
ZZ Top have cancelled two shows before the end of the week but will resume at the weekend with Michael Monaghan filling in on drums as he has all year.
Beard, born in Frankston, Texas, played on all 15 of the band’s albums.
