TWENTY-seven years into her career as Nashville Pussy’s riotously talented and entertaining lead guitarist, Ruyter Suys believes she’s finally become influential.
Suys lamented a decade ago that not enough young women were picking up rock guitars but as the band which launched a thousand internet censorship bots heads for its fourth decade, she is ecstatic that the tide had finally turned.
“I swear America is going to be the last bastion of this bullshit,” she tells Hot Metal.
“Because (in) the rest of the world, there’s always little kids and there’s always young women and young girls at our shows.
“America is a little slow but this last tour in October, I met so many little girls. Like, I mean nine-year-olds and 12-year-old and 14-year-olds and 18-year-olds.
“And they would come up to me after the show with this thank-God-you-exist look on their face and ‘I can’t believe you’re real’ and ‘I want to be you’.
“It was just so joyous. And I would see them while I was playing in the front row with their jaws open … ‘oh my God’.
“And they completely get it. They get it all. They get the sexuality, they get the anger, they get the musicianship, they get the just-wanna-go-fucking-crazy.
“There’s no barrier whatsoever. It’s just ‘I love you, you love me, let’s go conquer the fucking world’”
Suys wasn’t sure why attitudes had changed.
“There’s so many women out there playing music that I guess it’s not an issue anymore,” she said.
“There’s girls with guitars everywhere now so …. Now we’ve just got to get really good.”
