ICONIC Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has announced a solo album.

But don’t expect a funk-rock tour de force: Honora – due out March 27 – will be a jazz record with Flea taking to the trumpet more than a few times.

The first single “Traffic Lights” (below) will give you a taste of what to expect. It’s co-written with Radiohead’s Thom York, who also performs on it. As well as a bunch of jazz luminaries we bet you’ve never heard of, Aussie Nick Cave also guests.

In a media release to prom0te the album, 63-year-old Flea describes the effect on him as a child of family friends gathering in the living room to play music.

“It was the greatest thing I ever saw,” he is quoted as saying. “The wildness, warmth and we of it. Straight Bebop. Boom. I knew there were higher things on this earth, way above the pettiness that had left me disheartened. The holy trifecta of my life, music, sports and nature was complete.”

He revealed that when he turned 60, he resolved to practice trumpet playing every day for two years. That’s despite commitments with the Chili Peppers and at home.

Of working with jazz musicians on the record, he commented: “It turns out they were all the most genuinely supportive people, moving me deeply and daily with their generous spirits … Sitting in a room and playing the music with them made me feel like I was on drugs.

“I was buzzing, tripping and floating around the studio. I love them, they truly gave of themselves. I bow all the way down.”
