DRUMMER Matt Sorum has recorded a song with Bad Company legend Paul Rodgers and The Cult’s Billy Duffy.

Speaking on Sirius XM, the former Guns N’Roses skinsman says he became friends with 76-year-old singer Rodgers, also well known for his time in Free, over the past half-decade. Sorum is a former band-mate of guitarist Duffy.

“Paul is my neighbour here in Palm Springs, he lives here in the winter time,” Sorum told the Faction Talk station.

“Paul splits his time between Vancouver, Canada – his wife is Canadian, Cynthia – and he shows up here around January.

“I was at a house party, people out here in the desert do cocktail parties, and one day the door opened and in walked Paul Rodgers. I was like ‘oh my God’. I’d never met the man.

“This is about four or five years ago and I ended up being really close with him and his wife and we have dinner together and it’s just amazing.

“We had Billy Duffy here from The Cult, my old band-mate, who is a massive Free fan and we went in my studio and put a track together which we haven’t put out yet.”

Rodgers is involved in a Sorum project called Adopt The Arts which places music in schools in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. In each case, a choir of students called The Changels performs with well known rock musicians.

The next event is on March 2 at the Plaza Theater in Palm Springs.

“I’ve got to raise money – it’s a non-profit – so I’m doing a tribute concert,” Sorum told host Eddie Trunk, in relation to the next Changels performance.

“This year I’m honouring Geezer Butler and Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. I’ve got Lzzy Hale coming from Halestorm, Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stone Sour, Nuno Bettencourt who’s just blown up lately, playing all over the place, Steve Stevens (of) Billy Idol, Glenn Hughes the voice of rock, Robert DeLeo on bass from Stone Temple Pilots, Phil X from Bon Jovi, Stevie Salas who played with Mick Jagger, Charlie Starr from Blackberry Smoke….”

Rodgers was unable to attend Bad Company’s Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame induction on November 8 due to his health but Sorum said on the Trunk Nation show: “He’s doing great.

“The Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame thing, it was just really stressful for him and I get it because I was involved with Guns N’ Roses. It was just too much for him. This event, he’s going to come definitely and maybe perform one or possibly two (songs).”
