SILVERCHAIR leader Daniel Johns is making his long-awaited return to the stage this November with a set of four live appearances, his first in over half a decade.
We are looking at intimate conversation shows and not the usual live concerts. The gigs will take place in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Newcastle as a unique blend of storytelling, film, and music.
The centerpiece of these performances is the worldwide premiere of Johns’ highly anticipated short film, What If the Future Never Happened?. Each evening will see Daniel lead an hour-long conversation, followed by a film screening.
Attendees can expect a treasure trove of rare and unreleased material from Johns’ personal archives. Highlights include four-track bedroom demos from Silverchair’s Neon Ballroom, the original songwriting session for “Straight Lines” from the band’s final album Young Modern and even unreleased ideas intended for a sixth Silverchair album that never came to fruition.
And that’s not all because Johns will also showcase new music from his solo career and collaborative projects, ensuring that no two nights will be the same.
The musician shared in a press release: “What If The Future Never Happened? is equal parts reality and fantasy, and I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve ever done in my career. To celebrate the release of the featurette, I’ll be sitting on stage, telling stories, taking the aux chord, and sharing tunes that nobody has heard, as well as random ideas that couldn’t be realised or released. Basically, turning theatres into giant living rooms… it would be great if some people showed up, but I’m doing it anyway – you’re all invited!”
The sci-fi-inspired film is directed by James Medlam and serves as a nineties cinematic time capsule. The narrative follows a teenage rockstar named Daniel on an ordinary day in regional Australia, just before his rise to global fame. Actor Rasmus King portrays the young Johns, while the story takes a twist with a chance encounter involving a mysterious figure from the future. Shot in Newcastle in 2022, the film’s release coincides with the 30th anniversary of Frogstomp, Silverchair’s groundbreaking 1995 debut album.
The film’s soundtrack is another standout feature as it blends modern reinterpretations of Silverchair classics with stunning orchestral arrangements. Sound design by Adam Alexander of Bamm Bamm Wolfgang adds a rich, immersive layer to the experience. Fans first caught a glimpse of the project through its trailer in 2022, which coincided with the release of Johns’ chart-topping solo album FutureNever. The album made ARIA history by reaching No. 1 twice and spending an impressive seven weeks in the Top 10.
Tickets for Daniel Johns In Conversation: What If The Future Never Happened? go on sale Thursday, September 25. Frontier Members will have early access to a pre-sale starting Wednesday, September 24, at 11am local time. Adding an interactive element to these rare live appearances, fans will also have the opportunity to submit questions ahead of each event.
