SUPERSUCKERS main man Eddie Spaghetti has recalled getting stoned with Willie Nelson before they performed together on live TV – and drunk dialling the country legend from a bar years later.

Nelson and the garage rock heroes performed “Bloody Mary Morning” on the Jay Leno show in 1996, with Spaghetti walking on the set terrified of messing up after sharing more than a little whacky tabaccy with the legend on his tour bus immediately beforehand.

“I think you can only tell because I know –  I don’t think it’s evident to anybody else,” Spaghetti tells Hot Metal. “There wasn’t any glaring faux pas or anything that happened because of it.

“In fact I think in retrospect getting stoned with Willie Nelson was the best possible thing I could have done in order to make that performance happen like it did because the soundcheck was horrible.

“Like, we didn’t sync with him and it never got solved. We left soundcheck totally unresolved, all this static in our minds about how it’s gonna go. Willie was cool. He’s like ‘let’s go on the bus and get stoned man, c’mon’. So I did and it worked out great.

“But it was not a pleasant thing to go through, really.”

Spaghetti says he has remained friends with Nelson ever since.

“Willie and I kept in touch for quite a while, actually, after that. Even fairly recently he’s called with wish me a happy birthday. All the plans get made with his people but after the fact … I have Willie Nelson’s phone number.

“I had my phone out, I was at a bar and I came across Willie Nelson’s phone number and I was like ‘let’s call Willie Nelson!’. I was sure he wouldn’t answer.

“I called him up. The motherfucker answered! I had to cop to it. I said ‘I was just showing off in a bar that I had your number. Sorry!'”
