By DAN SOUTHALL

THIRTY years into their career and Converge are one of those bands everyone knows even if they aren’t sure why. Their metallic hardcore draws from many elements to create a sound that is confident, abrasive and listenable – and this release is no different.

In typical fashion, little time is wasted swinging into the title track with thrash riffs underpinning the chaos while lyrically expounding the virtues of love and compassion. It feels strange writing that down considering the aggressive music that holds this together but as the album plays, it becomes clear that this is an exercise in remembering to love and be loved. More on that in a minute or two once we rattle off a few more tracks.

Elsewhere, “Distract and Divide” combines with “To Feel Something” for a one-two punch before the darkness sets in with instrumental “Beyond Repair” pushing its weight upon the listener with a riff echoing out that feels like the last moments of breath being taken.

From here it’s back to the swivelling chaos that is Converge’s biggest stock in trade, as they remind us why we all come here in the first place.

At its heart, Love Is Not Enough is a reflection on everything the world has gone through in the 11 years since they last released an album without guests and experimentation. It’s also a reminder that although it might all be going to shit, you have control over how you choose to act and react in these trying times.

While love may not be enough alone, it is a large part of both being better and getting better.
