GERMANY’S Kreator have been a thrash tour de force for over 40 years at this point, helping to define the harder edge of the movement early on in their career before playing with their formula with varying success in the nineties. Unlike some of the other bands, Kreator decided in the early 2000s to throw out most of the awkward musical choices and focus on tearing ear drums and hammering out face melting riffs.
After an atmospheric opening, “Seven Serpents” gets down to exactly the kind of thing they have spent so long doing. Follow up track “Satanic Anarchy” changes gear from battering thrash to a more melodic bridge and chorus. There’s more focus on the hook and vocal lines with quick double kick drums to get from melody to riff and back rather than driving anything forward.
The title track sees the band begin to loosen up and begin a darker, more melodic approach. The last real stand out on the album are the death growls provided by Britta Görtz (Hiraes) on “Tränenpalast” mixed with moody keys, creating a blend between gothic and thrash that works well.
Beyond that this is thrash, exactly as you would expect. Flashy when it has to be, dynamic when it wants to be, wrapped in parcels that pass by in a flash with not much sticking in the memory past the earlier mentioned tracks. This doesn’t make it bad: sometimes meat and potatoes is a good enough feed. Other times it needs gravy to help it get down.
The second half of this album needs more gravy and a touch of salt, the mercy being that the tracks are compact in nature for thrash that helps it be over quick enough.
