CHERISHED Darwin rockers The Poor have lost original bass player Matt Whitby.
“Matt decided earlier in the year to step away from the Band for personal reasons,” the band wrote on social media.
“This was a massive shock to us all and something we did not want to happen, but we had to respect our brother our friend and one of the founding members of the band.
“This wasn’t an easy decision for Matt either but a change he had to make for his own personal reasons. We have nothing but total love and respect for our friend and brother, we speak regularly and look forward to catching up with him soon.
“We wish Matt and his family all the best with what the future brings.”
“This brings us to the next chapter of The Poor and welcome Stewart Williams to the family. Stewy has been a long time friend of everyone in the band and he has played in different projects with different members of the band over the years.”
Williams describes himself on Instagram as the bassist in The Poor and songwriter in Gold Coast band Derail. Tower and Lump are another two of his former bands. The industrial-tinged Derail opened for The Poor at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse last December.
The Poor were this week added to the Rock The Boat for 2026.
