CALIFORNIA’S Buckcherry have long been the saviours of rock and roll, and on album number 11 they continue to throw out tunes that have blokes bobbing their heads and birds shaking their rumps.
From sleazy AC/DC blues like “Come On” or the assault of the mission statement that is the album opener, this band has always been hit and miss, particularly when they slow down. But Roar Like Thunder is a sure fire hit. Even the slower “Set It Free” has just enough heartbeat and bluesy riffs to keep the ears engaged.
After a more than a few listens, the only real let down is “Talkin’ Bout Sex” and this is really just because the lyrics sound like they came from a 15-year-old lad who hasn’t yet experienced what it is he is drivelling about. Meanwhile there are tales of debauchery such as “Blackout”, a relatable tale of chaos from vocalist Josh Todd’s youth as a LA resident in headier times.
Roar Like Thunder is a throwback to their first two releases when there was really nothing left like them on the rock front. And here they are again, all these years later, still kicking it.
