AN APPARENT misunderstanding between the Black Crowes and a Florida audience has led to a culture war battle that made global headlines.
It all started on Sunday at Mid Florida Credit Union Ampitheater in Tampa, an area with plenty of military personnel, when the southern rockers hoisted a backdrop featuring their logo and an American flag.
The song about to be played was 1990’s “She Talks To Angels”, sixth from the end of the main set.
When the crowd started chanting “U-S-A, U-S-A” singer Chris Robinson appears not to to have made the connection between his own stage set and the response from audience.
Instead, he said: “Thanks for the geography lesson -I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.
This did not go down very well in a decidedly ‘red’ part of the United States. Audience members began booing and some walked out.
Robinson continued: “For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant!”
Culture wars play well in the digital media space so the incident has gone mainstream with The Independent, TMZ and The Daily Beast covering it.
