STREAMER Spotify is to begin labelling AI music and largely prevent its algorithm from recommending non-human compositions.
But many people don’t think the new measures, announced on Tuesday, go far enough.
The label ‘AI personas’ will be placed on so-called deep fake artists from September but initially those uploading the music will be asked to self-report.
There will then be a second level of oversight within Spotify itself and listeners will be able to tell if an “artist” self-reported or was identified by the platform.
Spotify said in a statement: “True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity.
“In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are. That’s more essential than ever in the age of generative AI.
“Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated.”
Last year Spotify said it had removed 75 million spam tracks from its plaform – a platform that otherwise holds 100 million songs.
In 2025 a classic rock band called Velvet Sundown achieved considerable traction on Spotify before it was discovered it was not a human group at all.
