IN tragic but unexpected news, a NSW coroner has found that missing Mortal Sin drummer Wayne Campbell most likely died shortly after he was last seen on CCTV footage more than three years ago.
Campbell has not been seen since he disappeared the night after his 57th birthday on August 20, 2022.
In reporting the finding by coroner Carmel Forbes, the Region Illawarra noted that no activity has been recorded against his bank account or passport, and that no trace of him had been found despite several searches of local bushland.
Forbes’ ruling found his death most likely occurred very soon after he was last recorded on video, but there was insufficient evidence to determine the cause or location. Police have ruled out any suspicious circumstances.
The cruel news is particularly timely, given last week’s announcement by his former band Mortal Sin, which has reformed to celebrate their 40th anniversary with local and international touring next year.
Campbell formed the band in 1985 with singer Mat Maurer and was drummer until 1989, then again between 1996 and 1998 and once more in 2004-5. He also toured and recorded with Temtris, Grungeon, White Trash and Saint Lucifer.
