FORMER Runaways singer Cherie Currie has revealed she has suffered a stroke, with a ’90 percent blockage’ of an important artery.
The 66-year-old musician first informed followers of her condition in a video posted to X from her hospital bed at 2 o’clock in the morning on October 18.
In that initial update Currie explained how a video she had shared earlier had prompted her to seek help.
“Well hey my X friends, it’s your buddy and your pal Cherie Currie, and it is 2 o’clock in the morning on Sunday, and I have to share something with you guys,” she said.
“Remember when I posted last week from that neurosurgeon, that woman that gave four signs of a possible stroke? And I posted it because when I saw it, I realized that I had some symptoms.
“The eye blurring was the most prominent, and my mental acuity has not been what it should be. And driving around today, I realized I was not OK. And I drove myself to the hospital, and I came in just shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops. I didn’t expect when they took the CT scan to show that I had a stroke.”
She went on to describe the findings of the scans. “I have a 90-percent blockage on my inner carotid (artery) which they found with the CT scan and the ultra sound,” Currie continued.
“So, what I’m just saying, is that I’m so grateful that I listened to myself, and I brought myself to the hospital. They’ve admitted me, and I’m going to be fine, but had I not watched and listened to that video, who knows? Because I have been really, really, with this carotid, 90 percent, very pushing the envelope, and we don’t want to do that.”
Later on October 18 she reinforced the message by resharing the neurosurgeon’s video that had alerted her to the danger. “This is the video I posted a couple weeks ago that saved me,” she wrote. “Please, if you have any of these symptoms, go to the hospital. Don’t wait for appointments. Time is precious when it’s a stroke. Love you all SO MUCH!!”X
In a further video posted around midnight on October 19, Currie addressed the medical team’s deliberations and expressed appreciation for the support she had received. “I think the doctors are a little, I don’t know, they are trying to figure out the right way to go about this,” she said. “I’m grateful for that. Number one, I’m so grateful for you, and all of your well-wishes, and your positive energy and just, wow. I mean, you are my people. I just love you.”
That same day she posted another message of thanks to her online followers. “You have all made this journey a positive one,” she said. “You are my people, my family and I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know. THANK YOU!”
Currie was discharged from hospital on October 19. The following day, October 20, she informed her audience of the release. “My X family. I was released from hospital yesterday but was too tired to let you know,” she wrote. “I’ll do a video tomorrow after some rest and quiet time to explain what is happening and why. Love you hugely. Big time.”
In an accompanying post she indicated she had received encouraging details about her care. “So much good info to share with you about treatment which I didn’t expect,” Currie added.
The Runaways, formed in the mid-1970s and featuring Currie alongside Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West and Jackie Fox, are widely regarded as the first major all-female rock group and are best known for the hit “Cherry Bomb.”
As of October 22 she continued to interact with well-wishers online while recovering at home, promising further details once she had rested.
