AMERICAN punk musician and producer Chad Gilbert has died.
Gilbert, 45, was a founding member of Florida pop-punk band New Found Glory, with whom he played guitar for their entire career. He stepped aside from touring in 2023 when persistent back pain was diagnosed as cancer but continued to record with the band.
At 14, Gilbert joined the hardcore band Shai Hulud as vocalist before leaving for the embryonic New Found Glory. He dropped out of school when the band won a record contract.
New Found Glory have recorded thirteen albums, breaking in 2002 on third album Sticks and Stones, the first of three to chart in the Billboard Top 20. The most recent, Listen Up!, was released in February.
Gilbert was also a prolific producer who worked with A Day to Remember, Terror, H2O, Lisa Loeb and others. In 2013 he produced and recorded vocals on Reach Beyond the Sun by former band Shai Hulud.
He had a history of cancer, first undergoing surgery for pheochromocytoma in 2021 and subsequently in 2022 and 2023. In April this year he reported he was now suffering from adrenocortical carcinoma. His wife Lisa posted on September 20 that he had died in his sleep.
