ROCK fans across the world held their collective breath in the lead-up to Bon Jovi’s July 8 date at Madison Square Garden.
Four years after throat surgery and a couple of years after his plight was documented on film, 64-year-old singer Jon Bon Jovi was making a comeback with nine nights at Madison Square Garden followed by a run of European stadium dates.
Dozens of livelihoods – maybe even hundreds – rely on JBJ being able to belt out “You Give Love A Bad Name” and “I’ll Be There For You”. The intrigue only built with recording banned at warm-up shows and associates like Trixter’s Steve Brown weighing in on the issue.
Well the date has come and gone and as is comment for public discourse this decade, there’s little room for nuance. Jon either made a triumphant return and proved the critics wrong or sounds terrible and will be ripping fans off for the next few months.
To our earns he sounds OK and more than acceptable on some songs, while struggling on others and needing the crowd to do the heavy lifting.
But don’t believe to us: listen to the videos below from night two, check out the setlist and decide for yourself if this is a show you’d like to see.
