ON New Years Eve we listed our most-read stories of 2025 – and the winner was a yarn about Alex Van Halen and Steve Lukather working together on a new project.
At the time, the 68-year-old Toto guitarist stressed: “I think there is a huge misunderstanding. I will not ever play a guitar note on a VH song ever!”
Now Van Halen drummer Alex, 72, has spoken to fellow skinsman Nicko McBrain on his new podcast Metal Skins. He didn’t give away much be he did say: “I’m getting ready to do this record with Lukather and a couple of other people. It should be exciting.”
Alex didn’t say much more and the extent to which this is from the VH vault – there is said to be four albums worth of unreleased material which includes the late Edward Van Halen – or a new project remains a mystery.
Edward’s son Wolfgang, however, has expressed the opinion that’s what’s in the vault should stay there.
In 2020, he told celebrity DJ Howard Stern: “It’d be a little shameless to do it right now. It’d be milking Dad and everything, with ideas that probably aren’t out there for good reason. You put out the good shit.”
