IN A bizarre radio interview, Star Trek legend William Shatner said Metallica’s hit “Enter Sandman” sounded like it was written from the perspective of a “child molester”.
When told on Sirius XM that the writer was the band’s frontman James Hetfield, the 95-year-old actor responded: “Is he a child molester?”
Shatner has been performing the song with his new heavy metal band and said on the Trunk Nation program he had his own interpretation of the song which he employed, explaining: “Sandman is a weird lyric. Are you aware of that?
“The words: ‘never mind the noise you heard/It’s under your bed and in your head’. Be nice little child, say your prayers. It’s a bizarre … if you’re an actor like I am, you’re looking at the words you’ve got to say. Who says this?
“I said ‘who would say this?’ A child molester would talk like this. ‘Say your prayers little one. Never mind the noise you heard, it’s under the bed, in your head’.
“Who says that? A child molester. It’s kinda evil. So Sandman is a pean of praise for molesting a child!
“Maybe not molesting but driving them nuts. Driving a child mad!”
When, on the Faction Talk station, it was suggested to Shatner the lyric was about bad dreams, he responded: “Well, individuals encouraging bad dreams. ‘Make sure you include everyone’.
“That’s my reinterpretation of ‘Sandman’.”
At another point of the interview, Shatner told host Eddie Trunk: “Heavy metal turns out to be, (in) my newly educated opinion, the force of life.”
Shatner’s band is called The Fuckers and their debut album, What The Fuck Is Heavy Metal, is out some time next year.
