By DAN SOUTHALL

NEVER a band to do exactly as expected, Sepultura decided to show one last time why they’ve always been leaders in the heavy music world, with or without the famed family that kicked it all off. This after the announcement of their retirement and with new drummer Greyson Nekrutman,

Bursting out of the speakers, “All Souls Rising” thrashes about for the first 30 seconds before taking an immediate right turn into symphonic atmospherics and dive bombing solos, showing off elements that always made this band stand out.

As Sepultura consistently display the musical growth they have chased throughout their recorded career and settled into over the last 28 years (!!!) with Derrick Green’s vocal talents, stand out moments continue.

Whether it is “Beyond The Dream” that feels like a farewell to Sepultura with its emotive vocals, the quick metallic hardcore of “Sacred Books” or the slow burn energy of closer “The Place” that once last time pushes politics to the fore of their musical identity, this is a definitive final statement from Andreas, Paulo and Derrick.

Sepultura have proven the doubters wrong once again. Even across the span of a short four-track EP they do not rest on their musical laurels as they twist, turn and experiment with everything before them.

Long Live Sepultura!
