JIMMY Barnes has shared a heart-rending story involving Cold Chisel’s late drummer Steve Prestwich and the reformation of the Oz Rock icons for their current tour.

Introducing “Flame Trees”, cowritten by Prestwich who died in 2011, at Gold Coast Convention Centre on Tuesday, Barnes said of the band: “We love each other like brothers but we do fight all the time.

“I had this idea of getting us together for a 50th anniversary dinner and at the dinner I raised the idea of us doing a tour. To my surprised, everyone was into it, everyone wanted to do it.

“It was such a relief that that night, I slept the deepest I had in ages. I slept like a log.

“And that night I had a dream. We were driving to the first show, all the boys in the back and I was the one driving which is unusual.

“And ‘Flame Trees’ came on the radio. Now, the way I do it in my solo band is different, a bit slower and I didn’t think the other boys would like that so I moved to turn it down.

“And as I reached for the radio, I felt another hand on mine, stopping me. I looked up and it was Steve Prestwich.

“Then I woke up and I didn’t want to wake up, I wanted to stay asleep because I had my mate back.

“Let’s play his song, eh?”

Singer Barnes has had his own run-in with mortality in recent timers, undergoing heart surgery at the end of last year as a result of a serious infection.
