FORMER Guns N’Roses drummer Matt Sorum has waded into the extremely thorny questions of how to categorise new music sensation Yungblud.
Sorum played in the Doncaster singer’s recent EP which saw him collaborate with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. In an interview on Sirius XM, he addressed the debate about whether the 28-year-old performer – currently touring Oz – was “rock’n’roll”. The same argument has come up regarding other rock sub-genres such as metal.
“When people talk about Yungblud, you know, ‘is he rock’n’roll?'” Sorum said on the Faction Talk station.
“My only equation around that would be: well, it does help rock’n’roll when we’re talking about rock’n’roll, OK, to a younger audience because what’s the (other) option?
“It’s like, OK, he wants to be the purveyor or wave the flag for rock’n’roll. All the better in my opinion. He’s bringing around people that are icons to give him credibility but at the same time introducing us to his fans and people who might not be familiar – as sad as that sounds – with the kind of stuff we’ve done for years, right?
“Some people liked him. some people didn’t but in my opinion, I think it’s a good thing for rock’n’roll in general.”
Sorum finished up on the issues by telling the Trunk Nation audience: “Anybody that’s waving the flag and heading in that direction, all the power – right? Good going, man. Keep it rockin’.”
