LEGAL complications and intrigue are a feature of the soap opera that is AOR titans Journey, who dare their fans to stop believing even as they instruct them otherwise.

The most recent drama involves conjecture over the involvement in a this year’s farewell tour of singer Arnel Pineda. Journey performed without Pineda and founding member Jonathan Caine at an NFL game on December 28.

Singing drummer Deen Castronovo posted on Instagram following that performance: “Good times at Levi’s Stadium last night with my brothers from Journey at the San Francisco 49ers game.”

Pineda, who is back in his native Philippines, posted in response: “Congratulations and have fun on your 2026 Farewell Tour” – obviously suggesting he would not be part of it.

But the intrigue surrounding Pineda, 58, does not stop with apparent reticence to rejoin his band. The vocalist is the subject of legal action in the Philippines under a law called Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children, which “criminalises acts that cause mental or emotional anguish to a woman or her child, including public ridicule, repeated verbal and emotional abuse, and denial of financial support or custody”.

Pineda’s legal representatives have claimed this was a frivolous allegation levelled in response to him suing his wife, Cherry, for adultery.

We’ll know more after Journey’s warm-up show at El Cajon, California, on February 7.
