AMYL and the Sniffers’ vocalist Amy Taylor is suing a photographer in the California courts for selling prints of her, which she says was done without permission.
The Aussie punk sensations’ high profile frontwoman accuses photographer Jamie Nelson of taking posed photos for Vogue Portugal and turning them into prints which she has sold despite being expressly told not to do so.
Nelson has said she is innocent of the charges and will reveal the particulars of her defence in court.
According to court filings, it was the band – through manager Simone Ubaldi – who approached Nelson first, asking in July 2024 that she photograph them for an album cover. Those talks, according to Taylor, fell through when the photographer made it clear she wanted to use the resulting shots herself.
Then Nelson asked for the Vogue shoot and the session was granted. ‘Fine art’ photos from the shoot remain on sale on Nelson’s website from US$1,500 to US$3,600.
Ubaldo wrote to Nelson saying: “I cannot be clearer about this — [Ms Taylor] does not want you to sell images of her face, or her body as fine art prints.
“If you had been transparent with her in advance of the shoot about your desire/intentions to sell the photos, she would have said no to the shoot.
“If you had any notion or desire to sell pictures of [Taylor] to recoup your costs, you should have disclosed this beforehand. We simply would have said no to the shoot.
“Moreover, after the foregoing interactions, [Nelson] expanded their exploitation … by offering a specially designed ‘zine’ that consisted exclusively of both published and unpublished images from the Vogue Portugal article.
“Not only was this done without Ms. Taylor’s permission and in direct contravention of her wishes, but it appears to have been done in retaliation of Ms. Taylor’s demands that [Nelson] stop their unlawful exploitation of Ms. Taylor’s name, image and likeness for [her] commercial interest,”
