ALEX Van Halen has been dismissive of Sammy Hagar since the release of a book he wrote about his brother Eddie – now he’s gone a step further by calling his former band-mate an idiot.
Interviewed by Brazilian magazine Roadie Crew, Alex was asked about the respective biographies of Hagar and David Lee Roth.
On 2011’s Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, Alex said: “I don’t know what he wrote, and I don’t want to know. In my opinion, Sammy Hagar is a complete idiot.”
On Sunday, Hagar responded to the quote via social media.
“This comment and post is so unnecessary at this time in our lives, but I guess the truth hurts sometimes.Peace already.”
Alex had begun with his summation of Roth’s 1997 biography, Crazy From The Heat.
“It’s quite fun and accurately reflects his sense of humour. Although the text is somewhat abstract and loses its train of thought at times, it’s still a very interesting perspective on that era.”
Despite Roth allegedly ruining plans for a tribute concert or tour for Eddie and a number of other issues he has had with the brothers over the years, Alex has consistently sided with with him over Hagar publicly since the guitarist’s death in 2020, saying the band did their “best work” with Roth.
Hagar hardly gets a mention in the 2025 Alex book Brothers, aside from a reference to “other singers”.
