Gig review: Whores + Hexe + The Wrecks + Full Tone Generator at Singing Bird Studios, Frankston

SO I got a heads up about a great act coming outta Atlanta, Georgia called Whores.
Intrigued by the name, this little black duck delved into their catalogue.
The more I listened, the more I liked. Next minute they’re a staple on my playlist, alongside other “Reptilian Records” artists Supersuckers and Helmet.
What’s that ? They’re coming to Australia? Wowsers, I’m there! At a very reasonable price I might add.
Blown away that a mint noise rock band from the States is coming Down Under, let alone playing in the outer outer burbs of Frankston, made me an even happier camper.
I went along with a smile on my dial.
Hexe opened proceedings and were amazing – especially with it being only their second outing. Massive sound and tight as a fish’s rectum, they gave off a distinct Melvins vibe and had me hooked from the first power chord. A four piece from Bayside Melbourne, these guys will be one to look out for in the
near future.
The Wrecks hit the stage next up after a seven–year hiatus and seemed to pick up where they left off. I wasn’t sure what to expect as they looked nothing like they sounded. They were a straight-ahead punk explosion but with elements of everything from The Eastern Dark to Clowns and The Bronx. I think I even detected a smidge of early Maiden in there. Like to catch them at another show later soon.
Full tone Generator graced the stage next with their Clutch type stylings and an excellent stage presence to boot. Having just returned from shows in Europe and The US, FTG have honed their craft down to a fine art. A great set was unleashed upon the sweaty Frankston crowd and the finale of the track ‘Never To Return’ made me nod and make that face you make when the rock is rockin’
our soul. That’s a good thing.
Like an arrow ready to be launched from a bow, I could feel that tension as Whores were poised to unleash the beating they were about to inflict upon us.
It was their first Australian tour and they didn’t hold back.
Wow… the energy was palpable and the crowd were with them. An incredible live act, the three-piece sounded like a tidal wave when they kicked in.
Songs with titles like ‘Baby Bird’ and ‘Tell Me Something Scientific’ are a few stand outs.
‘I Have Prepared A Statement’ is another not-so-hidden gem.
I felt like Helmet and The Jesus Lizard had a bastard love child and named it Whores.
They impressed this little black duck and have found a life long fan.
I quite liked it by the way.
