EUROPE are about a week into their Final Countdown 40th anniversary tour – and they’ve added an unusual section to the concert.
Twelve songs in, they perform the album track “Danger On The Track” – which they had not previously played live since 2018. In a bid to honour their long-serving crew members, the band does a theatrical piece with the stage set up like a rehearsal space.
Matresses are projected on the video screens to imitate primitive sound proofing and singer Joey Tempest says: “When we started playing together we had this small rehearsal space.
“We didn’t have a crew so we had to carry our own stuff.
“These days it’s different because we have best road crew in the world. Please give it up for our crew!
“Two or three of those guys have been with us 30 or 40 years. We can’t get rid of those guys.”
Crew members then wander on and off stage and Tempest sits down, pretending to read from a lyric sheet as they play the song. It’s the only theatrically performed song in the set.
In Wolverhampton, Tempest said afterwards “I’m not sure what we were thinking when we came up with that” and suggested it may be scrapped.
But at the time of writing the theatre musical spot is still part of the show. What do you think? Does it work?
