FOR VETERAN rockers Alan Lancaster (bass guitar with Status Quo, the Party Boys) and John Brewster (rhythm with the Angels, the Party Boys), this band may be the last throw of the dice.

If you were expecting Angels/Quo-type boogie, forget it – particularly on side two, where some songs stray into wimp rock land. Hard as it is to believe, we have here two hard-nut boogie vendors, a screeching West Australian he-man metal singer (Tyrone Coates), a junior Rick Nielsen show-off axeman (Steve Crofts) and an intimidatingly large drummer (Peter Heckenberg)actually turning out commercial power ballads!

The Bombers have worked painstakingly on trying to satisfy both their Aussie pub audience and the soppy US single charts. They a pretty much succeeded, but in doing so have sacrificed a large slice of cohesion and continuity And while there are a number of very impressive compositions – mid-tempo ditty “Escape” being the all-too-perfect example – the Bombers will need their fair share of lucky breaks to have a bona fide hit single.

The number of covers sits somewhat uncomfortably with me too. Party Boys songs “Is This The Way To Say Goodbye?” and “She’s A Mystery” are not really improved upon. I know Lancaster and Brewster were overwhelmingly responsible for writing them, but can’t they write two new songs instead? And while The Angels’ “City Out Of Control” is a Bombers live favourite, I can’t see the point in re-recording it so soon after Doc Neeson’s lads did so on Beyond Salvation.

But all in all, worth a place in your collection.
