AUSSIE rock star Daniel Johns has responded to a critic who said he needed to “ditch the eyeliner” and start rocking again.
Hot Metal yesterday posted a ‘lost’ review from 2017 of Spawn (Again), a covers compilation dedicated to Johns’ former band Silverchair.

In it, journalist Andrew McKaysmith writes: “A key benefit of Spawn (Again)is probably entirely unintended: It might be a catalyst for Johns to ditch the eyeliner, synths, baggy black pants with the crotch starting south of the knees, bizarre Justin Timberlake impersonations and force him to take a long hard look in the mirror.
“(Johns) commented that ‘I didn’t want to be, like, 50 and have people say what did you do with your life?…and all I had to show was Silverchair records’. That comment reeked of far too many late nights partaking various vices to dull the senses.
“If I had reached the age of 50 with his talent, his (potential) canon of (rock) albums under the Silverchair moniker and the can-do team he had behind him … I would be immensely proud of my work.”
The review is six years old but clearly 44-year-old Johns, who disbanded Silverchair in 2011 to work on a wide variety of projects in film, TV and music, had not seen it until Wednesday.
“Simultaneously offended and complimented,” Johns wrote on Twitter.
McKaysmith was unrepentant.
“You’re welcome. As one of the greatest rock frontmen in the business, Daniel Johns, I just wish you’d kick out the jams again.”
