FRANCIS Buchholz, the Scorpions’ bass player from 1973 until 1992, has died of cancer. He was 71.

His loss was announced by his family on Facebook on the morning of January 23 in a post that read: “It is with overwhelming sadness and heavy hearts we share the news that our beloved Francis passed away yesterday after a private battle with cancer. He departed this world peacefully, surrounded by love.

“Our hearts are shattered. Throughout his fight with cancer, we stayed by his side, facing every challenge as a family – exactly the way he taught us.

“To his fans around the world – we want to thank you for your unwavering loyalty, your love and the belief you placed in him throughout his incredible journey.

“You gave him the world and he gave you his music in return. Though the strings have gone silent, his soul remains in every note he played and in every life he touched.”

The statement was signed by his wife Hella and their twin daughters.

Aside from his time in the Scorpions, Buchholz started an amplification company in the late 1970s and more recently played with a former band-mate from the Scorps, Michael Schenker.

He played on some the band’s biggest hits, including “Wind Of Change” and “Rock You Like A Hurricane” and co-wrote the song “Kicks After Six” on the Crazy World album. His departure was down to business differences, not creative – had a been running the band’s affairs and was stripped of that responsibility.
