By DAN SOUTHALL

THE original industrial Zombie returns refreshed on this, his eighth solo album.

Refreshed because it see the return of musical core Riggs (guitar) and Blasko (bass) who helped create his highly loved and recognisable HellBilly Deluxe and Sinister Urge. Those albums loudly announced his determination as a solo artist after the dissolution of cult noise/industrial heroes White Zombie in the mid-nineties.

What makes this album feel like such a retrospective return to form after a string of strange, largely forgettable albums is the dissonant industrial thump and grinding guitar work that was missing in the more psychedelic, oddly-titled era. Barely hiding behind the pop-horror, mystic album opener “F.T.W. 84” is a biting take on society circa 2026, quickly followed up with “Tarantula” and the very self-descriptive “(I’m a) Rock N Roller”. Much like later track “Punks and Demons”, this has Rob Zombie re-affirming his credentials for those that only know him as a schlock horror film director.

The Rob Zombie musical schtick had grown tiresome some time ago, but somewhere in the recording of this album, he seems to have found its soul again. Sure, it could be said this is just more spooky stories and industrial heavy music. Yet amongst it is there is a reinvigoration, making this album feel as fresh as some of the late White Zombie and early Rob Zombie releases. With every track punchy in its own way, each one is in and out in a hurry, leaving you humming another riff or bobbing your head to the invisible beat of industrial war drums.
