DEEP Purple’s members are far too …. mature these days to get in any trouble on their current tour of Japan – but if they were to, they can rest assured they have friends in high places there.
The English legends were late last week guests of honour in the office of the country’s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, who presented them with a set of drum sticks in honour of her favourite band.
“You are my god,” she said in English with the cameras whirring. the 65-year-old head of state said.
Purple first toured the Land of the Rising Sun 50 years ago and recorded a celebrated live album there. And with singer Ian Gillan recently revealing his eyesight is going, it’s not sure they’ll ever be back.
Prime minister Takaichi – herself a drummer – told a rather unusual story at the media opportunity that followed the meeting in her office, saying: “These days, when I fight with my husband I drum to ‘Burn’ and cast a curse on him.”
OK, then.
Takaichi is Japan’s first female prime minister. She says she once played keyboards in a Deep Purple tribute band.
Elected on a platform of working hard, she has said in previous interviews she listens to the song “Burn”, from the 1974 album of the same name, to clear her head.
