WITH his Las Vegas residency – with Aussie Rai Thistlethwayte in tow – about to kick off, former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar has released a song and video with a rather unique origin story.
Hagar, 77, says he wrote “Encore, Thankyou, Goodnight” in a dream with guitarist Eddie Van Halen, during a dream – and the accompanying video depicts the phenomenon.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Hagar recalls: “He had a guitar around his neck and we were having a love fest since we hadn’t seen each other in a long time. And he just started playing this riff, and I started singing.
“I just grabbed a pad and a pencil and I got my iPhone. Ny wife’s screaming ‘what are you doing?’ I said ‘writing a song!’ It just kept coming and coming. When I got up the next day, I grabbed my guitar and started to figure out the chords.”
Hagar’s residency at the Park MGM kicks off on Friday.
In the same interview, but a subsequent article, Hagar mused on Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen’s antipathy towards him. He was barely mentioned in the older brother’s recent book, Brothers.
“Al, you’re fine,” Hagar was quoted as saying. “Just leave me alone. I’ll leave you alone. Everything’s good.
“I think Al’s angry because I’m out doing it, and Mike and I are out doing it, and he can’t. ”
