THIS week’s update begins with the news that Canadian pop-punk heroes Sum 41 have cancelled all Australian appearances due to singer Deryck Whibley’s pneumonia diagnosis. The band were making their final world tour, co-headlining Good Things and due to play a further three Australian shows. Sum 41 will finish their farewell tour in Toronto on 30 January.

IN case you missed it, ZZ Top and George Thorogood and the Destroyers are touring together in April and May. Along with their Elevation Tour shows in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, both bands are also appearing on the Red Hot Summer Tour with The Living End, Baby Animals, Rose Tattoo and Dallas Frasca in Bendigo, Mornington, the Hunter, Wollongong and Sandstone Point.

Melbourne heavyweight champions Dreadnaught are teaming up with The Eternal in January to tour the release of their new album, Shutdown in a Heartbeat. The tour includes several regional shows in NSW and Victoria.

Slipknot have added a single Australian sideshow to their Knotfest tour in March – they’ll be playing AEC Arena in Adelaide along with the festival.

Wild news from the Blacken Open Air festival with the revelation that the notorious Blood Duster is reforming to appear when the event returns for the final time in September. Even with the rest of the line-up still a mystery, the festival is selling rapidly.

SEPTEMBER 19 – 21: Blacken Open Air, Alice Springs

Another dual headliner has been announced this week, with Atreyu celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Curse with special guests Memphis May Fire, making their first Australian visit since 2015. The tour will hit Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in July. Tickets go on sale on 10 December.

Brian Giffin is a metalhead, author, writer and broadcaster from the Blue Mountains in Australia. His life was changed forever after seeing a TV ad for 'The Number of the Beast' in 1982. During the 90s he wrote columns and reviews for Sydney publications On the Street, Rebel Razor, Loudmouth and Utopia Records' magazine. He was the creator and editor of the zine LOUD! which ran from 1996 until 2008, and of Loud Online that lasted from 2010 until 2023 when it unexpectedly spontaneously combusted into virtual ashes.
