MANY fans deride it still but Metallica’s 1991 Black album continues to make history.
The iconic LP has now been certified as having sold 20 million copies in the United States – making it only the 14th record of any genre to reach the mark and the first from heavy metal.
Hardcore Metallica fans complained the Bay Area titans sold out by releasing an album with hit singles such as “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters”. But if the band themselves are the unforgiven, they have scant reason to shed a tear over the situation.
The Eagles’ Greatest Hits and Michael Jackson’s Thriller are the only long players to have surpassed 30 million sold in the US.
The Aussies aren’t far behind with Ackadacka’s Back In Black on 27 million sold and The Eagles’ Hotel California on 26 million. Then comes platters by Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks and Pink Floyd.
After that we have Hootie and the Blowfish, Fleetwood Mac, Green Day and Shania Twain.
