THE Sydney local council responsible for allowing Angus, Malcolm and George’s childhood home to be demolished says a National Trust recognition of the property in 2013 was toothless.

News is still slowly funnelling out across the globe that 4 Burleigh Street in Burwood – in the city’s inner west – had been demolished without warning to make way for a $28.75 million residential development.

The dwelling was listed on the National Trust Register of Historic Houses in 2013.

But in a statement to news.com.au Burwood Council said that recognition had no legal impact at all and was absolutely no obstacle to the property being sold for $5.8 million and flattened.

“As it is not heritage listed or protected under local or state legislation, and because The National Trust is a community-based, non-government organisation, with no statutory authority, the property does not have enforceable protections,” the council said.

“Burwood Council remains committed to finding new ways to celebrate the Young family and the area’s rich musical heritage.”

It seems no-one cared enough about AC/DC’s legacy – including the band’s organisation itself – to push for full heritage listing.

During the online outrage over the demolition, Sydney’s long-serving overnight ABC radio host Rod Quinn recalled he was once not only given a tour of the property but shown the sewing machine bearing the phrase that gave AC/DC their name.

Utopia Records posted that they often took visiting overseas musicians there but at one stage gawkers were chased off because it was a brothel.
