THE Casanovas have never been shy when it comes to both rocking hard and wearing their rock and roll hearts on their sleeves. Backseat Rhythms sees them doing exactly those things excellently yet again. With the cover art mimicking The Cult and the title lifted from AC/DC, The Casanovas pinch things from here and there, mix them together and then punch out a bunch of no frills rock and roll songs.

“The Devil in Me” gets things underway sounding as if it could have been lifted straight from Power Up with its chiming riffs hard-hitting from the get-go and promises of an album full of nothing less than flat out rocking ahead. And Backseat Rhythms does not disappoint on that count, piling 80s-style hard hitters like “When You Want” on top of “The Lover”’s Leppard-esque arena rock and the mean, dirty chug of “City Streets” with its endless soloing. “Burning Up the Night” goes totally balls out and The Casanovas extend their frame of reference even further with “The Last Time Was Good” invoking an Eagles-like country rock vibe.

The swing in Wolfie’s drumming adds colour and vibrancy to Tommy Boyce’s catchy riffing and each song is ridden with hooks and big choruses that will get any rock and roll crowd into party mode. They certainly aren’t reinventing the wheel – or rock and roll, for that matter – but they have built a streamlined machine of their own with the parts they’ve borrowed from other craftsmen. Backstreet Rhythms rocks.
