CANBERRA headbangers Pilots of Baalbek go even harder on this new album than on their debut, with a raucous rock and roll ride every bit as wild as Mike Foxall’s cover art.
By the Seat of Our Pants is a roller coaster of breakneck rocking riffs that brings together space rock, flat out boogie, proto-metal, garage punk and stoner vibes in the most glorious way imaginable – think Hawkwind, Status Quo, Buffalo and Budgie thrown into a blender and served up hot and cranking.
“Sea Fury” combines catchy boogie with trippy space rock synths, “Glide Slope” turns on the stoner grooves with a huge riff and “Cargo Cult” blends a similar vibe with some pure Quo worship that goes into something almost honky tonk perfectly accentuated by growly vocals low in the mix. “Family Knowles” throws in a wonderfully warped riff into an otherwise straight-ahead Motorhead-like rocker complete with explosive soloing, Adam’s vocals even deeper in the mix than your average stoner record.
We could pick apart every track on here and analyse the pure rocking joy in each one but there’s no real need – if you’re looking to rock, there are few better places to start than with By the Seat of Our Pants.
