ADDING to the this year’s carnage in the world of metal, Swedish singer Tomas Lindberg has died at the age of 52.

Spearheading an inspirational shift in death metal through his work with his band At The Gates, Lindberg’s death was revealed on September 16. The news was initially broken by former Opeth bassist David Isberg in a social media post.

Lindberg announced only last month that he had been battling adenoid cystic carcinoma since a diagnosis in 2023, forestalling any further work with At The Gates. In spite of this, and treatment which saw part of his mouth removed, he eventually completed the vocal takes for the band’s forthcoming album. It was the first in a more than a decade to feature Lindberg working alongside both Anders and Jonas Björler.

Also known as Tompa, Lindberg featured in an array of bands across various genres during his career. Following the initial break up of At The Gates in 1995, he went on to front the crust punk band Skitsystem along with thrashers The Crown, his hardcore/thrash project The Great Deceiver, grindcore supergroup Lock Up and Greek melodic death metal unit Nightrage.
