ONE person is dead and five remain critical after the roof of a theatre collapsed in Illinois at the weekend before a Morbid Angel concert, as a result of a tornado hitting the town of Belvidere.

A tornado siren sounded 23 minutes before the roof directly in front of the stage collapsed on Friday. The dead man was identified as Fred Livingston junior, a 50-year-old father of three.

Revocation and Skeletal Remains were the support bands and it’s thought the latter was playing at the time of the incident, although this has not been confirmed.

The total number of injured is 40, out of a crowd of 260. The Apollo Theater had stood in the town since the 1920s with significant recent investment in its restoration.

Belvidere has a population of about 25,000. Mayor Clint Morris said: “Our community is heartbroken.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue for Fred Livingston, his family, his loved ones and all those injured in this tragedy.”

The 90mph winds were so powerful they threw bricks at cars parked on the street outside.

Morbid Angel, a pioneering Florida thrash band active since 1983, in a statement quoted Livingston’s niece Brittany as saying: “Last night, my uncle, Fred Livingston Jr. went to the concert at the Apollo theater in Belvidere and unfortunately was identified as the person who didn’t make it.

“Our family is beyond devastated. We can’t help comprehend how this could happen to us. Please share and donate if you can.”
