ETERNAL Australian rock legends The Angels will be on a giant national tour from June through to November.

While big tours are nothing new to the pioneering pub rock road dogs, this excursion will have special significance as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the country’s greatest rock anthems.

“Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again” was released as the band’s first ever single on March 1, 1976. Written in the aftermath of a motorbike accident that claimed the life of then-manager John Woodruff’s girlfriend, the original version featured late vocalist Doc Neeson also playing bass. The track was re-worked for the group’s debut album the following year but became a crowd favourite in the eighties when the now-infamous crowd chant made it popular.

The band learned about the call-and-response when they played the song as an encore at a show in Mt Isa. Neeson learned later that it began at a Blue Light Disco in Sydney, but the real origins are lost.

“[We] had nothing to do with the chant,” guitarist Rick Brewster says of it. “And we love that – it’s something that the audience has given us.”

“When we play the song,” says brother John Brewster, “we’re thinking about all the people we’ve lost, like Doc and Chris Bailey. And all the people that we’ve played with over the years. And all the roadies, the tour managers, the record company people, our friends and, of course, all the fans.”

Now a mainly family affair with John’s sons Tom and Sam filling out the line-up and Nick Norton out front, The Angels will visit every state on the 25+ date jaunt.
