PHIL X, Bon Jovi’s current guitarist, has spoken about his relationship with his predecessor Richie Sambora – and it’s not all good.
The 58-year-old Canadian has been in the band fulltime since 2016 and performs on the new album Forever, due out June 8. He says he thought he had a good relationship with Sambora, whom he first substituted for and then replaced.
“The first interaction we had is we rehearse in LA for it,” X told SiriusXM, in reference to Bon Jovi’s 2018 induction to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
“He was totally cool. I feel like it was the least awkward for me because the last time everybody else saw him, he walked off a world tour without a word. So this is the first time everybody’s seeing him, years after that.
“I was like ‘hey dude, what’s happening’ and he was ‘hey, where did you get that guitar?’ and we were playing guitar together and it seemed fine.
“And then the second time we rehearsed was at a Bon Jovi soundcheck for the Prudential Center show in 2018 and again, we’re cool and everything’s fine.
“And then I think he stayed for the show for about the first 30 minutes and I think he was hit by a feeling that ‘wait a minute, this is my home town arena and I’m not playing and everybody’s enjoying this show’.
“So I think he kinda felt like … I dunno, it must’ve been weird because the next time he saw me he kinda whispered something not really nice into my ear and I was like ‘wow dude, really? I thought we were good!'”
