PHIL Campbell, the former Motorhead guitarist who in recent years performed with his sons, has died. He was 64.

The news the Welsh musician had died after a”long and courageous battle in intensive care following a complex major operation”.was announced on his social media on Saturday and was greeted by overwhelming grief in the rock and metal community.

Campbell had twice cancelled Australian tours in recent months and was supposed to be leaving the country right now after five dates which had been deferred from September. Journalist Martin Popoff reported he had been the victim of an unsuccessful liver transplant.

Drummer Mickey Dee, now the only surviving member of Motorhead, said: “He was the funniest guy I have ever known and the best rock guitar player I have ever played with. His vibe and feel for rock music were outstanding. We wrote 12 studio albums together, and he never stopped surprising me with his extreme talent. Most of all, I will miss hanging out with the nicest guy you could ever meet.

“Sleep well, my friend and rock soldier. Say hi to Lemmy, Würzel, Filthy and Eddie. I am sure you’ll be a crazy gang hanging out together again!”

The Motorhead organisation said in a statement:”Phil was a wonderful guitarist, writer, performer, and musician who had Motörhead in his veins.

“He always led with his gift of guitar, and carried a great sense of humour but most of all, Phil led with his heart. You could not be around him without a chuckle or 20, because quite simply, Phil loved life and lived it with great joy.

“There will be plenty of time for us to share stories – tales of Campbell glory – and some good jokes together; for now, please send love and positive energy to Gaynor and the boys while affording them time, space, and privacy.

“Much love and RIP Phil. The world has just lost an enormous beam of light, and we are devastated.”

German singer Doro said she was “lost for words”, Twisted Sister vocalist Dee Snider made reference to Campbell’s nickname for him – Midler’ and countless other musicians joined them in paying tribute.

Campbell spoke to Hot Metal twice during our digital era – in 2017 and 2025.

He told Brian Giffin last year – referencing his sons Todd, Dane and Tyla: “We’ve got a bunch of songs written for the next album, as well. We’ve got about eight songs so far.

“We have recorded then, just roughly so we don’t forget the damned things! But we’ll probably, in all honesty, try to find some time in the next year to record them properly. Hopefully some time before the end of next year we’ll have the next record out. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
