FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Wednesday, April 5 2023, 10am Australian Eastern time
ICONIC Australian media brand Hot Metal and decorated heavy music website Loud Online have merged.
Hot Metal proprietor Steve Mascord and Loud Online managing editor Brian Giffin have made one of the year’s most significant music media announcements, confirming an entity that defined the adolescence of so many rock fans will now have the backing of a website with 12 years worth of content, respect and integrity.
“This is a dream come true and a partnership for which I’ve been searching the last five years,” says Mascord, a journalist with 40 years’ experience covering sport and music.
“I came up with the name of Hot Metal when I was fresh out of high school, at a time when the genre was still very much underground.
“Hard rock and metal’s rise to be a major force in popular culture coincided with the ascent of the magazine’s posters to the walls of young fans across Australia and New Zealand.
“The Flexi-discs, the records, the cassettes and the covers are the stuff of legion and I always felt a powerful responsibility to refloat the brand. I’ll be forever grateful to my long-term friend Brian for making a dream come true.”
Giffin adds: “When I was a young music fan, Hot Metal was the only publication writing about the kind of music I liked the best. I still have the first eight copies of it stored away in my archives.
“Hot Metal was the standard for Loud when it began as a zine back in the mid 90s. I always aspired to uphold that level of content and integrity when it moved online, and I was honoured whenever Steve was able to provide the occasional contribution.
“A short time after Loud Online came to an end early this year due to a web hosting issue, I caught up with Steve at a gig in Sydney, and we decided to join forces, bringing our two great music outlets together. I feel privileged to be able to work with a friend and a writer whose work I so much admired as a young music fan.”
Thanks to Brian and Loud Online, Hot Metal’s flag is finally at full-mast again and working hard so that a new generation of hard rock and heavy metal fans feel compelled to salute!
