WITH his band’s first and final Australian tour kicking off tomorrow night, Kip Winger has revealed the country is central to his ambitions when his career in rock is soon over.
The 63-year-old eighties pin-up plans to concentrate on his classical music when Winger’s world tour eventually comes to a close – a tour that will hit Melbourne’s 170 Russell tomorrow night.
But the band’s last tour of Oz won’t be his own final visit, if he has any say in it.
Recalling a 1989 publicity trip to Sydney, during which he had his photo taken on the North Shore looking back on the Harbour Bridge at Opera House, Winger tells Hot Metal: “I do remember taking that photo, actually.
“It’s the first time I saw that opera house.
“Now I’m thinking I’ve got to get my music played in there.
“Hell yeah. Embarking on my new classical thing, I’m going into it with as much fire as I had when I was 20 going into the rock thing, you know?”
Asked to outline his ambitions, Winger said: “I’ve been lucky enough to get a lot of performances.
“It really comes down to if you can get performances, you know, and if conductors dig your music.
“I’m lucky. My music seems to translate well because I took a great deal of time learning how to do this on their terms. So it’s not, like, rock guy who thinks he can come in and do this thing when he really can’t.
“Like, I can actually do it, you know?
“Look, there’s nothing more exciting than to put your music in front of a 60-peace orchestra and have them blare through it, just kickin’ ass on something like that.
“It’s really exciting, you know.”
