THE key to producing any type of digital content in 2023 is getting viewers or readers to stay on the page.

We live in the age of the swipe – so it would seem ingenious to put out a music video featuring a gun fight, from which there can be only one winner and which will invariably keep the viewer in suspense.

That’s what the new clip by Melbourne rockers Palace Of The King does; but there’s another perennial of the online age that needed outsmarting first.

That is: copyright.

Because this isn’t just any gunfight, it’s from the 1968 film Once Upon A Time In The West and features Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda!

“I had the footage all edited up to go with the song and then I went to the band’s YouTube channel –  which I hope everyone subscribes to – and that’s when you go through the checks,” recounts POTK singer Tim Henwood.

“I just had my fingers crossed that it was going to be OK because … I had in the past used public domain footage and this wasn’t that.

“But .. I had noticed some of that era of movie was being used in other kinds of YouTube videos.

“I just thought ‘we’ll give this a shot and see how it goes’.

“I just thought that looked way cooler, their rough faces … than if we were doing something slick and filming something new.”

Because there’s only one thing worse than a bullet from a gunfighter’s pistol – and that’s a copyright strike.
