WHITESNAKE guitarist Joel Hoekstra has backed a proposal for the band to record a farewell record with as many former members as David Coverdale can assemble.

The storied English blues rock outfit is off the road at the moment with many shows on what was to be a farewell tour cancelled due to health issues. It’s uncertain whether that tour will ever resume.

“I will say that I don’t think we got a proper finish on the farewell tour,” Hoekstra, 53, told Sirius XM.

“It was cut short and it would feel nice to have some kind of plan. I know he’s mentioned doing an album with the current line-up and past members and I think that’s a terrific idea. I would love that.

“Just to have a lot of people who have been part of the Whitesnake history and make an album together … because there’s much more of a kinship there than people realise.

“They think there’s a lot of animosity. Honestly with David, I think that only exists with one past member.

“(It would be) a fitting end to Whitesnake as far as recording goes. Hopefully David follows through on that.”

Former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden died in August. John Sykes is known to be estranged from Coverdale but Eddie Trunk on the Faction Talk station said Coverdale wanted to reconcile with him.

“That’s a shame because John is widely the most popular guitarist to have been in Whitesnake in terms of his sound with David and the great riffs that he wrote,” Hoekstra continued.

“He’s a phenomenal talent. I’ve never met John myself but anything I could ever do … I’d be open to trying to get those two together, you know?

“I think it was magic in a bottle, especially on the ’87 record, right?”
