GEMS guitarist Mona Lindgren says she won’t be going into the audience with her guitar like Thundermother’s Filippa Nassil because doing so is “a shitshow”.

The Gems split acrimoniously from Thundermother when Nassil fired singer Guernica Mancini and many of the songs on the former’s debut album Phoenix are inspired by the ugly split. Lindgren has switched from bass to lead guitar but told Hot Metal Nassi’s boots have not been hard to fill.

She said she had no trouble picking up how to play Thundermother songs but she would not be reprising her rival’s habit of playing solos in the crowd, ala Angus Young.

“Personally I’m very tired of the cliches,” Lindgren said.

“Like, the cliched rock moves. I’d rather not do it and going out in the audiences and having your wireless system cracking down … the signal goes in and out.

“I think that’s a shitshow, to be honest. So I will not go into the audience.

“Also I think that’s not so innovative because that’s exactly the same thing that the guitarist in Airbourne does so why just copy his whole move by just going into the audience playing all of these riffs?

“I think it’s better to invent something you own yourself. ”

Asked if it was hard to learn Nassil’s parts on guitar, Lindgren said: “It’s very easy, I would say.

“I learned the songs very fast. The riffs are very easy to play.”

The Gems recently released a video for their latest single “Queens”.
