DAVE Grohl executed one of the best pieces of crisis management in rock’n’roll history today when he confessed to infidelity hours before the US presidential debate.
In a revelation that had even casual rock fans gasping, the 55-year-old Foo Fighters frontman said he had fathered a daughter outside his marriage of 21 years to Jordyn Blum, which has produced three daughters.
But before indignant onlookers could decry ‘there goes my hero’, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris sucked all further available oxygen from public discourse by debating each other on TV from Philadelphia.
It was public relations 101 as bad news was released when it could do the least damage to a public figure’s IP with mainstream analysis cut off at the knees by a bigger event.
Grohl’s full statement read: “I’ve recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage.
“I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.
“We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.”
Recruiters in the field of reputation and crisis management will no doubt be making discreet enquiries as to who made the call to time Grohl’s announcement so shrewdly.
